Niall Matter was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He grew up on a dairy farm just south of the city along with his two older brothers and his younger sister. His parents are owner/operators of their own company ‘Matter Water Service’ wherein they deliver fresh potable water to acreages via semi trucks. Niall started acting when he was thirteen after being approached by a local drama instructor at his school. He went on to become a lead in several High School productions and won “Best Male Actor” in his graduating year at the Alberta High School Zone Provincials for his portrayal of Groucho Marx in ‘A Night in the Ukraine’. Aside from theatre Niall began writing/directing and starring in his own short films at the age of thirteen. Niall relocated to Vancouver shortly after graduating from High School and attended Vancouver Film School. Following graduation from VFS Niall divided his time between the Oil Rigs back home in Alberta and auditions in Vancouver. Apart from booking a few commercials this was a gruelling time for Niall and he almost walked away from acting six years after graduating because he wasn’t catching his break. In 2006 just two weeks before his 26th birthday Niall booked his first lead role in a SCI-FI original movie ‘Beyond Loch Ness’ opposite Brian Krause of ‘Charmed’. Niall then immediately went on to book a series lead on the new TV show ‘The Best Years’ in which he plays Trent Hamilton. He’s also now a recurring character on the NBC owned series ‘Eureka’ which airs on SCI-FI and the Space channel. Some other TV credits include roles on ‘Stargate Atlantis’, ‘Heaven or Something Like it’ and 'Mistresses'. His feature film credits include ‘Dr. Dolittle: Tail to the Chief’, ‘Summer House’, and ‘Watchmen’ which is directed by Zack Snyder of ‘300’.
Niall recently relocated from Vancouver to Los Angeles. Shortly after making the move he booked a guest star role on NBC’s new horror anthology series ‘Fear Itself’. This sent him north of the border again and to his hometown, Edmonton, Alberta where the series is filmed. He’s now currently filming season three of ‘Eureka’ which will take him until mid February of 2009 to complete.
